In the autobiography The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass the author, Frederick Douglass, was born into a plantation in Maryland as a slave in the early 1800’s. He then moved to Baltimore where he was taught to read and this has a great effect on him. Douglass continues to gain more and more knowledge as he is passed on to different masters, until he gets his freedom. Douglass’s use of juxtaposition, characterization and tone conveys his constant faith that education is the key to freedom.
Frederick Douglass was born into slavery on the eastern shore of Talbot County, Maryland. His date of birth is unknown since they didn’t keep records back then, but he adopted February 14 as his birthday and his mom called him “ my valentine’’. He lived in Holmes Hill Farm for seven years with his mother Harriet Bailey and his father Aaron Anthony. When Frederick was about eight he got separated from his family and got sent to the Why House plantation, also known as the Great House. The owner was very wealthy and owned 1,000 slaves who worked in the fields.
This book explained how Douglass outlasted slavery. If we never learned about his life, no one will truly understand slavery from an inside source. Douglass wrote his narrative to explain how slavery is terrible for slaves and how slavery corrupts slave owners. Slavery is terrible for slaves because they work nonstop and are beaten. Slavery corrupts slave owners because they treat other slaves like beasts, thus making the master a beast itself.

When Douglass is sent away to Mr.Covey he is treated pretty badly but eventually he stands up to Mr.Covey and demands that he stopped being treated like an animal.
