“Actions are the seed of fate. Deeds grow into destiny” said by Harry S. Truman is about actions creating fate which then turns into destiny. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is a story of a boy called Santiago who decides to follow his destiny. Santiago’s adventure takes many turns caused by his fate and free will. The momentous events that happen in life are caused by a combination of both fate and free will.

Fate can be seen as the cause of many occurrences in life, but free will is what allows many situations to develop. A common example of fate is love. “One is loved because one is loved. “Most people see the world as a threatening place, and, because they do, the world turns out, indeed, to be a threatening place”(128). The mind tricks one to believe in what they think, though wrong, which leads to their choices. Free will is only an illusion, and fate already has control of the universe’s destiny. The mind itself could be an illusion, but the events that happen naturally from fate can be changed by free will, or, in other words, the unconscious control from the mind can be changed by the conscious mind resulting in free will to exist. “There is that one moment, and the incredible certainty that everything under the sun has been written by one hand only. It is the hand that evokes love, and creates a twin soul for every person in the world”(95). Fate is a story written of the entire universe, and controls everything within. Free will does not change what has already been written by fate as it is all controlled by one. The universe could be made of a single being, but the choices made by people change outcomes of what is supposedly fated.
