Freedom is a concept that can be defined by many things, from the freedom we earned from the American revolution to pure independence at its core. We need our independence, and in the novel Brave New World, there is no such thing as individual freedom. Freedom has been sacrificed for stability through manipulation, and genetic modification.
Controlled by a single world governing body, this society is manipulated and regulated constantly through selective breeding. From birth, humans are scientifically altered to fit their destined path according to their social class. They have restricted individual rights, and instead, are given rights corresponding to their social class. Each person exists to serve the community. Everyone is molded into a caste, which are the Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons. Alphas being the highest caste, and Epsilons being the lowest. The world the civilization lives in, is a closed box. They have no liberty, or individuality. “Out of the two thousand million inhabitants of the plant had only ten thousand names between them” (Brave New World, P. 27) They are all created with the same main interests, but with some differences like the Epsilons being ignorant and unattractive, while the Alphas are intelligent and captivating. In return for sacrificing their freedom to be a part of a stable society they had no war, no sadness, no individuality, no history, no literature, no families, no emotional ties to others since they all belong to each other, no solitude, no scientific freedom, and no religion. “God” has been replaced by Henry Ford.
