During the Vietnam war three students protested in their high school by aiming to wear black wristbands and the school had said they couldn't but they wore the wristbands anyways and got suspended from school. They then took the school to court for violating their 1st amendment, the court decided that because they were expressing freedom of speech through non-disruptive symbolic speech, the school was at fault.
