The French Culture The French Republic is located in Western Europe, northeast of the Iberian Peninsula and south of England and the English Channel. The country of France has a rich history and traditions for being one of the oldest modern countries in the world, being able to trace back to 987 AD with influences as far as early 5th century. It is also one of the larger Western European countries with a total land mass of 210,026 square miles or 543,965 square kilometers. The national capital of France is the city of Paris, which is one of the most commonly known cities in the world. France is the largest country in Western Europe surrounded by large bodies of water on two sides of the country, the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel to the west and the latter being north making the coastline for France 3,427 km. The Surrounding other countries are the Iberian Peninsula, that is made up of Spain and Portugal to the southwest and several other countries to the east to include Belgium, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Luxembourg. For centuries, France’s location has played a huge part in the development of the country both economically and culturally. The terrain features for France is mainly flat with hills scattered throughout with two different mountain chains, Pyrenees Mountains near the border of Spain to the south and the Alp Mountains to the east near Switzerland. Due to the country, being mainly flat around 52 % of the country is used as agricultural land. The climate is for the most part cold winters and mild summers throughout the country. However, the parts of the country near the Mediterranean Sea the climate is more humid in the summer and less cold during the winter. France also has five overseas territories scattered all over the globe. These countries are French Guiana near northern South America, Guadeloupe and Martinique located in the Caribbean, and Mayotte and Reunion located in the Indian Ocean in the vicinity of
