Romeo’s last words before his death, “Here’s to my love. O true apothecary, thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die” (5.3.119-120). In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet fall in love, get married, and kill themselves for love all behind their parents’ backs. There are 3 people that can be blamed for the death of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo, the Capulets and Montagues, and Friar Lawrence, are the 3 people that should be blamed for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The first person that should be blamed for the tragedy is Romeo. At the scene of Romeo and Juliet’s death, Friar Lawrence confesses, “I am the greatest, able to do the least, yet most suspected, as the time and place doth make against me, of this direful murder. And here I stand, both to impeach and purge myself condemned and myself excused” (5.3.32-36). He explains that because he was there at the time of Romeo and Juliet’s death, he is suspected to have killed them. He should have been able to stop Juliet because he was there. Instead he chose to abandon the couple. Also, he let this plan take place. “Then comes she to me, and with wild looks bid me devise some mean to rid her from this second marriage, or in my cell there would she kill herself. Then I gave her” (5.3.248-252). He agrees to help Juliet by giving her a potion that makes her appear dead for 42 hours. Because of this, Romeo believes she was dead and poisons himself. Friar Lawrence could have thought of an alternate ways of working around Romeo and Juliet’s problems. There are many people that can be blamed for the death of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo, the Montagues and Capulets, and Friar Lawrence all had a big part of the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Each character is caught in the middle of the problem.
