In Romeo and Juliet, people started having a debate on who was guilty or held responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. Many would argue that it was the Capulets and Montagues, others would argue that it was the Nurse. It makes people wonder, who is the person to blame? But this will be about how Friar Lawrence is the one held responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence is a character who shows up a lot in the play. He is a doctor, he gathers herbs which he makes medicines out of. He is also a priest for Verona. He is a religious, kind-hearted man who believes in the best in people. She tells the friar she would rather die than marry Paris. So Friar Lawrence comes up with a plan that Juliet will drink the poison while he delivers the letter to Romeo. “ If, rather than to marry County Paris, Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, Then is it likely thou wilt undertake a thing like death to chide away this shame, that copest with death himself to scrape from it: And, if thou darest, I’ll give thee remedy.”(4.1.72-77) This demonstrates that Friar Lawrence isn’t a good role model. He is the adult in the situation he is telling Juliet who is a teenager to fake her death so she doesn’t have to marry Paris. Friar Lawrence doesn’t think about the problems this could create for everyone, he doesn’t even fulfill his part of the plan. One mentions that the friar only married the two so he could resolve the feud between their families. That Friar Lawrence wanted to help resolve the quarrel between the two families, And he couldn’t have known that Tybalt would kill Mercutio. If Tyablt never killed Mercutio then Romeo would have never been banished and Juliet wouldn’t be in that situation. Another reason others believe the friar is innocent is that he did send a letter to Romeo about the plan for Juliet. He sent it with Friar John but he was delayed because of the plague. Friar Lawrence wouldn’t have known that the plague would have delayed the letter. One believes Friar Lawrence is innocent because he was only trying to help the two lovers so they could be together. He was doing what he thought was right and was doing what he could to help
