Frida Kahlo was also an example of how one can get through even the hardest circumstances. Her trauma began when she was only six years old. The young Frida Kahlo contracted polio, which would lead her into an almost nine month period where she was locked away in her room struggling to recover. Even when the illness subsided, she was left with damage to her right leg that caused her to limp. This was not the end of her ordeals. When Kahlo was in college she was traveling with a friend on a bus when a streetcar ran into the bus. Kahlo was severely injured. Kahlo considered herself a communist and a Mexican patriot in a time when it was unusual for a woman to be interested in politics. She was even friends with Russian communist party member Leon Trotsky and in her diary it is even written that they had an alleged affair. The fact that she not only participated in communism but also was having an affair with a well-known communist shows just how radical she was. There is also a lot of testimony that Frida Kahlo had affairs with women as well as men which in her time would have been considered absurd and rebellious behavior. By going against these expectations of her time, Kahlo established herself as a unique character. One last piece of evidence for Kahlo’s feminism was her signature mono brow. It was not the mono brow itself; however, her feminism came from what it stood for. She wore on purpose to go against the common social behavior of her time. Admirably, she did not shy away from being bold in her feminist like actions. Moreover, she was someone who could express the true struggles of a woman in her time through her artwork which made her even more of an inspiration to modern
