The women of America have been fighting for rights and equality since the beginning. They have written books, published articles, made speeches, held marches, and lead lives outside what was the norm for their times. In Fried Green Tomatoes the female leads between the two narratives are no different. In their own ways they lead lives that, while different from each other’s, all stood for how they felt a woman should be able to live. Though these characters are fictional they represent very real women of both the past and present. Within the main narrative of Fried Green Tomatoes viewers follow the stories of Ruth and Idgie. Some women live like Ruth and are well respected by the people around them. They are women who while quiet most the time will stand for what they feel is right. They protect and they lead lives that seem simple on the outside but are anything but that. In 2018 there are many women living like Idgie as well. They dress androgynously, they have short wild hair and they are very outspoken women. Women like this face harsh criticism from older generations, but they are celebrated by their generation and by those younger. They are the ones seen making speeches and not following the norms of society. Last but definitely not the least are women who struggle like Evelyn. They are strong, hardworking and powerful women. While they struggle to find who they are and struggle to be confident, they are stronger for it. The characters of Fried Green Tomatoes represent what it means to be a woman in American culture. They lead lives that challenge men, society norms, and the era they live. Each female lead in some way represent women of both the past and present and they live within us today.
