Jody Miller’s, Getting Played, illustrates to the common eye, what young people have to do to survive on a daily basis in poor urban communities. These poor urban communities often have a negative connotation which usually scares off common folk. The residents of these communities are usually African Americans. They face challenges daily that common people wouldn’t even dream of worrying about. Jody Miller describes what makes girls go through these victimizations.
Another symbolic boundary created between the preps and las chicas was the sexual relationships that the girls had with boys. Bettie argues that, “there were girls who did and girls who didn’t across all group categories, but the race and class injury that occurred was in the perception of who was too sexually active” (2002:68). While the prep girls kept their identities clear and clean with birth control or abortion, the las chicas did not have as many options as they did thus leaving them with a negative light. The las chicas’ style was interpreted by school personnel and preps with more dismissal then anything. Bettie argues that the “las chicas’ style” wasn’t taken as a “marker of race/ethnicity” and “class distinction” but “was reduced to gender and sexuality” (2002:65).
Racial tension has been a hot topic in our country for a long time. No matter what laws and regulations are passed, there will still always be racial tensions and cruel people. In the short story “Brownies” by ZZ Packer, a young group of black girls are at a scout camp with other young, white girls. After being called the N word by a the group of white girls, the young black girls believe they are being discriminated against. Throughout the story, Packer depicts the very real problem of racial discrimination in young kids, just as in older adults.

Love tends to effect each character’s action differently. For example, love is what motivated the plot of the story “The Valley of Girls” by Kelly Link. For instance, the Olds observed society and performed actions to make sure their children are aligned with success. Love and social status is what makes these people relate, or correlate with each other; it reminds me of a government politically develop by love and society. In “The Valley of Girls” by Kelly Link, from Teenagers and Old are motivated by two specific motives, which are love and social status.
In her ethnography account Women without Class, Julie Bettie explores the relationship that class along with race and gender work to shape the experiences of both Mexican American girls and white working class students. In her work, Bettie finds that class cannot only intersect to impact the school experiences of both working class and middle class girls, but also their transition to adulthood and their future outcomes. Thus, Bettie explores how working class girls are able to deal with their class differences by performing symbolic boundaries on their styles, rejecting the school peer hierarchy and by performing whiteness to be upwardly mobile. George Saunders first published The Semplica Girl Diaries in The New Yorker in 2012 and then again in his collection of short stories Tenth of December, in 2013. The main characters are a middle aged, unnamed man and his family (a wife, two daughters and a son). In an interview Saunders admitted that the inspiration for this twisted story came from a dream which explains the origin of a strange concept in it— Semplica girls, women from underdeveloped countries paid to hang in rich people’s gardens, connected to each other by a wire in their brains. However, the main message is a conscious writing choice. This story explores the struggles deprived people go through and choices they make when facing them.

Starr Carter, the protagonist of Angie Thomas’s young adult novel, The Hate U Give, epitomizes the subversion of cultural racial oppression through the development of an identity that encompasses multiple consciousnesses. As an African American teenage girl raised in a middle-class family attending a high school with primarily White upper-class students, Starr finds the need to prove her belongingness to both communities in Garden Heights and at Williamson Prep. Unlike her White upper-class counterparts at Williamson and African American middle-to-low-class counterparts in Garden Heights, Starr’s identity is multifaceted.
