Finally, I wish to turn my attention to Futurism was launched by the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in 1909 and lasted till 1944. Taking speed, technology and modernity as its inspiration, Futurism portrayed the lively character of 20th century life, glorified war and the machine age, and favoured the growth of Fascism (conservative). Futurist painting used elements of neo-impressionism and cubism to create compositions that expressed the idea of the energy and movement, of modern life. The key artists to this movement was Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni and Gino Severini. He was particularly interested in depicting lively urban scenes, for example in “Dynamic Hieroglyph of the Bal Tabarin” (1912). In Bal Tabarin, Severini includes dancers, top hats, instruments, drinks, and club décoration, as well as reference to the era’s political climate; the colourful flags and the Arab riding a camel refer to the Turco-Italian War of 1911–12, in which Italy gained control over Libya. This painting depicts chaos that can associated with the Futurist genre. At first sight, its appears to be lacking composition, lacking a focal point where there are different shapes and lines and colours that do not necessarily flow together. After analysing, it becomes evident that this image shows the movement and ideas of dancing and socialising. This is also evident with the words “polka” and “valse” printed over the artwork, both being a type of dance. When looking at the two people dancing, there is no distinct/ clear face; instead it is broken up and pixilated representing the fluidity of movement.
