Purpose and Focus: The purpose and main point of chapter one of Hope and Healing in Urban Education are that youth in low-income environments need extra hope and attention in order to succeed. Shawn Ginwright explains that while it may be difficult to reach these communities, it’s a worthwhile investment of time and resources to improve them. Ginwright uses personal examples of people who have been affected by the struggle of living in a crime-ridden and low-income neighborhood in San Francisco. The eldest sibling examined, Tanya, a community organizer suffered the loss of her younger brother, who was murdered while he was visiting her on holiday from college.
More than 20 million people in the United States attend colleges and universities each year. Colleges have different techniques to get students to attend. Colleges and universities advertise their institution using rhetoric to entice prospective students to attend. Students are bombarded with rhetoric from colleges and universities showcasing that attending and continuing to seek a higher learning is beneficial. Colleges use rhetoric to bring about an idea that obtaining a degree guarantees a better life position.
Many would argue that by relieving debt from students, it would act as an economic stimulus. Students unburdened by their financial load are likely to pour their money right back into the economy by purchasing goods or services. As Webly mentions, "college graduates are the type of people society needs to do things like start businesses, buy homes and cars, invent things, and make babies" (130). Their extra cash would flow back into the economy increasing revenue, creating new jobs and businesses that would lead to a growing financial system. But this solution causes disillusionment, a one-time payout from the government will not solve the economic crisis like it promises.
As a single mother, she has done everything in her power to make sure that her two daughters receive the education they deserve. Several college students deal with monetary obstacles every week. They have to deal with college books, meals, and dorms or apartments before they can even think about having any money left over for fun activities. College books, meals, and having a place to stay are all monetary obstacles because college students have to make tough decisions to get over these humps. Such as if they should choose a cheap apartment so they can have extra money for fun and risk having bad off campus living experience or choose a moderate to expensive apartment for a good off campus living experience but risk having potentially no money for fun at all.
If college is supposed to be the next step in our lives, why is it so difficult to handle? We should be able to concentrate more on our work. This is just another example of us being kept down. If we are going to have enough courage to come to college and attempt to learn, they will punish us with cost and make sure we have to work to stay so we can’t do as well as we should.
Students can't pay back loans for many years. Then, as a domino effect, there is more debt. Middle class parents , are caught in a tight web because they can afford college on paper but in reality, have no money left for retirement and receive no financial aid.
