Ralph Ellison once said, “When I discover who I am, I will be free”. You might be asking who that is, but I couldn’t tell you myself. The main point is that his quote deeply relates to Gabi, A Girl in Pieces. In the novel Gabi, A Girl in Pieces, the theme of Identity is the most important theme because Gabi’s identity means a lot to her and her family and having an identity is something that everyone has to deal with.
To some, identity might not be relevant, but to Gabi, identity plays a very big role in her life. “ I mean, this is America and the twenty-first century, not Mexico one hundred years ago. But, of course, I can’t tell my mom that because she’ll think I’m bad. This is important to the story because his parent’s beliefs made him think that there was something wrong with him being gay and instead of accepting himself, he became his own enemy. As a result of that, Sebastian had a difficult time with his identity. While it might be true that the theme of family or friends is an important part of Gabi, A Girl in Pieces but those critics would be incorrect because friends and family are actually created by identity.
I won’t lie, I still feel pretty shitty about not being able to walk with my class--I feel like I let myself down--but seeing my beautiful crazy and colorful all-American family sit together at a slightly sticky table in one of the best hot wing restaurants in all the land, in a rundown shopping strip, made me feel like everything was as it should be, and that all the things I am worried about are gonna be alright.
And if anyone has trouble understanding that, well, they can kiss my ass.
