Ravi wants to win, but instead he faces different challenges and. In the short story “Games at Twilight” by Anita Desai, one theme that could be used is that things do not always work out as planned, and you sometimes have to face your fears to get what you want. Ravi is the youngest boy in his family and he wants to win the game, hide-and-seek, and beat his brother, Raghu, but he does not succeed and is forgotten. His motivation is to be the winner of hide-and-seek, have the others jealous, and be taken seriously. The consequences of Ravi’s motivations are that he gets scared, loses the game and gets forgotten. Ravi wants to win, he tries as hard as he can and he wants his siblings to be found so they will be jealous that he won. Ravi thinks,”What fun if they were all found and caught, he alone left unconquered, he had never known the sensation. Nothing more wonderful had ever happened to him…”(6) He wants to win the game because he has never won before and if he beats Raghu they will be jealous and he will feel good. In addition, he wants them to take him seriously and wants them to be jealous, but acts like a little kid throwing a tantrum. Ravi yells,”’Raghu didn't find me. Instead, He gets mad, disappointed and acts immature. Ravi thinks,”It was dark in the shed. It had a muffled smell as of graves...Ravi stood frozen in the shed.”(5) The shed scares Ravi, he does not like the dark and he is frozen. He stays there alone for hours thinking something might happen to him, Ravi relates it to death. Furthermore, Ravi is in the shed for hours and when he comes out he is forgotten. Ravi, seeing his siblings, is annoyed and full of emotion,”His voice broke with rage and pity at the disgrace of it all, and he felt himself flood with tears and misery...they had quite forgotten him.”(6-7) Ravi wanted to win so badly that he stays in the shed too long and when he finally comes out they are not playing the game anymore.
