Problem With Gang Violence
Imagine you're walking down a street in a shady, dark part of town, and you get to the corner of the street. Once you get to the edge you see two teenage boys, the same two teenage boys that always hang around that exact corner. You think you have an idea of what they are doing but you're not sure. This example may seem extreme to some, but it is a scenario that is common to many people living in large cities in the US. Gang violence can affect many neighborhoods. “Ganging Up: Gang Violence KO’d” states that Gang related crime decreased about 30 percent from 2004 to 2006, but in June of 2007 the New York Police Department showed a 47 percent increase of gang violence. “The authors cite numbers from the New York mayor's office showing that gang-related crime fell about 30 percent from 2004 to 2006, while a U.S. Department of Justice report from June 2007 cites data from the New York Police Department showing a 47 percent increase” (Radley). “Turf Wars; Gang Violence” states that the United states is estimated to have over 33,000 gangs with about 1.4m members in each gang. “America is estimated to have over 33,000 gangs, with approximately 1.4m members”(Turf Wars; Gang Violence). This matters because it’s showing how quickly gang violence can increase or decrease. This article shows us how Gang violence and Gangs can always increase or decrease. Gang violence is very common among young teens because it offers a family-like bond with the other people in the gang, but it can also be very harmful and has a high risk of injury or death. Gang violence is always increasing and decreasing, but one thing stays the same: people will always join gangs because they have been neglected in some way, and are looking for friends and security. Once you enter a gang, it stays with you forever; even if you try and get out, the gang will always try and find a way to get back into that person’s
