The theme of “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out” by Shel Silverstein is to don’t procrastinate. Sarah was tasked to take the garbage out, but she puts it off. The garbage started to pile up until it spanned across the country, while her friends and neighbors have abandoned her. After realizing her mistakes, Sarah finally agrees to take out the garbage, but it has grown so much that she can’t possibly do it. Consequently, she soon dies under the large mass of trash. In the poem, “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out” by Shel Silverstein, the theme, don’t procrastinate, connects to my life. For example, when I was in fifth grade, I had to complete Math worksheets as a morning warm up. If I didn’t finish those worksheets, I would have to keep it in my folder to hand in later. Same thing goes for Reading and Social Studies homework. Instead of doing my work like I was supposed to do, I completely slacked off on it. I talked to my friends in the morning and didn’t do my homework. The unfinished work accumulated, and once the Second Quarter was about to end, I realized if I didn’t finish and hand in all the worksheets, I’ll fail in all of my subjects. Since I wanted to pass the quarter, I had to finish all of that work. I estimated that I had around two weeks to finish the stacks of paper, so if I did three or four worksheets at night quietly after my curfew of nine o’clock and early in the morning six o’clock, I’ll be able to finish most of my work. I did manage to finish it, but the hardest part was handing it in. I was pretty sure they wouldn’t accept my stacks of the worksheet to correct over Winter Vacation after already correcting other stacks of papers. However, they accepted it, and I passed the quarter.
