Characters can go from scrawny, to powerful; dumb, to smart; and mean, to kind. In the book Gathering Blue there is character growth and characters that don’t change at all. Maslow’s Hierarchy is a triangle that describes your level of personal growth. In Gathering Blue the characters Kira, Jamison, and Thomas are all on Maslow's Hierarchy in one way or another.
In Gathering Blue Thomas is a very dynamic character, he is a carver who had his parents killed in a lightning storm and then starts living in the Council Edifice. To be dynamic you must change somewhere on Maslow’s Hierarchy. Thomas starts out on the level of safety; this means that he is safe, and out of harm’s way. Thomas lives in the Council Edifice, because his parents were killed when he was just a tyke. The Council Edifice is the place where the government lives and works, it’s also the safest place in the village. Thomas can’t be considered in the Love/Belonging section yet, because there is nobody else living there his age. By the end of the book, Thomas has reached the level of esteem. Esteem means that Thomas is confident, is respected, and respects others. Thomas reaches this level because Kira is able to get Thomas into the love/belonging stage. After that thomas begins to grow

Jamison did not move on Maslow’s hierarchy; he stayed on the level of esteem. Jamison lives in the Council Edifice and is one of the members of the Council of Guardians, which is the government for the village. Jamison made up these things called the beasts to keep people living in fear, so they could be controlled easily. Jamison wants people to respect the government, and to do that he does horrible things like lie to the people. Near the end of the book, we keep finding out about his lies and all of it was to gain respect from the people. While some people are willing to change, others are
