Hope is easily the most abstract concept to describe, as it can never be fully expressed, neither in words nor in deed. Decay, however, is always the same. In reference to hope, decay is a constant. Decay will slowly eat away at any hope, and if given enough time, will leave nothing but dust. Hope, however, is ever-changing, able to lead an individual to several different outcomes. Hope is a beautiful lie, whereas decay is a harsh reality. Jay Gatsby’s delusional, irrational insistence to cling to the tattered remains of long-dead hope proves to be his inevitable destruction.
