“All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong and repairs the evil. The only crime is pride.” A man named Sophocles once said this in the play, Antigone. Pride is where a person has a very high and mighty opinion of their own selves. This may lead to turmoil in lives of their self or others. In the literature pieces, “The Scarlet Ibis”, Speak, Ready Player One, The Odyssey, The Lord of the Flies, “Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”, and “All Summer in a Day”, the common theme of pride is represented throughout the novels. The long-term outcome of pride led to the destruction of a humble character and led to chaos. Pride is shown throughout any individual who has an explosive amount of confidence in their own self. …show more content…
Brother, Doodle’s brother quotes, “When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who could not walk.” Brother obtains an immense amount of pride in himself where he even comments to tell the audience that he, himself, was embarrassed of having a younger brother who could not walk. This remark and the characterization of Brother eventually led to chaos where Brother abandons Doodle in a storm, and the outcome resulted in Doodle’s death. Because of Brother’s pride, it led to chaos that resulted in death. The short-term outcome of exhibiting pride toward a society or others may lead to self-benefit. An example of the short-term benefit of showing pride comes from the novel, Ready Player One, written by Ernest Cline. In the novel, Nolan Sorrento displays his pride and threatens Parzival. He quotes, “Log out before I say it’s ok, and your whole world goes boom. Understand? Now start talking.” This is an example of authoritative pride used by Nolan Sorrento. Parzival ends up with the happy ending rather than Sorrento does. As these characters have displayed such pride, nothing came along with it but pure catastrophe. In one of the scenes of The Odyssey, Odysseus and his men are trying to venture back to their homeland, when they meet a Cyclops. Odysseus and his men slay the Cyclops. After he does, Odysseus says, “If any mortal man ever asks you who it was inflicted upon your eyes this shameful blinding, tell him that you were blinded by Odysseus, sacker of the cities.” Because of his excessive pride, Poseidon, the god of sea, is committed to kill Odysseus, which; therefore, leads to chaos. In Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, pride is also often shown. Adolescent boys were stranded on an island and decide to form together as a society. Jack, one of the boys, doesn’t want to abide by the rules and responsibilities nor does he want Ralph as his leader. His pride sways him to go against the group. He says in the book, “I’m not going to play any longer. Not with you.” Jack decides to hold a vote to kick out Ralph as their chief, and no one votes. Jack’s pride was lost and ended up being led to turmoil. Pride can be anywhere at any time, especially in schools. Speak, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, is about a young student named Melinda who experiences depression throughout her first year of high school. Melinda was raped by a boy named Andy Evans. Andy mentions, “I never raped anybody… you wanted it just as bad as I
