Gay Marriage Controversy Analysis

“I think that gay marriage should be between a man and a woman.” As of this past June, this stated belief by Arnold Schwarzenegger was rejected by the Supreme Court. The debate over legalizing gay marriage has been over for some time. This was arguably one of the most controversial issues that our nation had ever dealt with. Some people believed that we should redefine marriage to include homosexual relationships whereas others believed that the institution of marriage should be preserved strictly for heterosexual relationships. Along with these popular viewpoints, there is also this radical position that was represented by Michael Kinsley in one of his articles. In his article “Abolish Marriage”, Kinsley argued that ending the public institution of marriage is a favorable solution to the gay marriage controversy. According to the Washington Post, a poll conducted by themselves and ABC News in 2014 showed that 59 percent of people support same-sex marriage while 34 percent are opposed to it. On one side of this issue are conservatives that believe that marriage has been defined to be a sacred union between one man and one woman and on the other side are liberals that generally believe that marriage is a constitutional right attributed to two people that are of age and not related. Both sides want their definition of marriage to be completely supported by our government. Therefore, it is impossible to resolve this gay marriage issue in a way that appeases both parties.
