The anthology has 338 pages of the actual book and 402 including the prologue, afterword, notes, sources, and index. This nonfiction, hard-back paper book portrayed women’s roles both within and outside of the home starting in the late seventeenth century and ending in the early nineteenth century. The analysis begins with the lives of Margaret and her descendants’, followed by the influence businesswomen and their contributions had on the city of New Amsterdam, as well as the American Revolution in later years.

There is no question that women have struggled over many years to be seen as equals by their male counterparts. Years of struggle and oppression continued throughout time, but the oppression took different forms over the course of history. Susan Glaspell wrote, “Trifles” which explores a woman’s status in society during the 1920s and the political leanings that perverted society at the time. The play demonstrates how women were subjected to mental abuse and viewed as intellectually inferior as dictated by American society and politics. “Trifles” exposes how political leanings in the government favored and enabled a patriarchal society as well as displaying how the Women’s Rights movement was beginning to combat these prejudices.
Women’s Role’s Edith Wharton born in 1862 became a world known writer. Focusing mainly on class structure and women’s roles, Wharton portrayed to the world the lives of people during the 20th century. Gender inequality, as well as moral and ethical dilemma was a prominent issue not only in society but, became evident throughout Wharton’s writing. Determined to share her experiences with the world Wharton disguised moral and economic situations in literature that allowed readers to connect mentally. During an era where social class and wealth defined a person’s entity, Wharton seemed to focus mainly on the higher class structure.

After all, the majority of the population grows and develops opinions or values based on what they see or hear. For Esperanza, the protagonist of Sandra Cisneros’s, The House on Mango Street, the perspective she has is built upon her childhood on Mango Street. This coming-of-age novel illustrates how Esperanza’s experiences on Mango Street play an important role during her period of growth.

Raisin in the Sun: Gender Roles Defied Following the event of World War Two, America during the 1950s was an era of economic prosperity. Male soldiers had just returned home from war to see America “at the summit of the world”(Churchill). Many Americans were confident that the future held nothing other than peace and prosperity, so they decided to start families. However, the 1950s was also a time of radical changes. Because most of the men in the family had departed to fight in the war, women were left at home to do the housework.

In the third vignette of ‘The House on Mango Street’ titled ‘Boys and Girls’ the reader is informed of the division between men and women when Esperanza refers to herself and her sister Nenny , and her brothers, “They’ve got plenty to say to me and Nenny inside the house. But outside they can’t be seen talking to girls”. The male dominance begins at a very young age.
Gender roles play an important role in A Raisin in the Sun. During the time A Raisin in the Sun was written the idea of set in stone positions in a household and society were common. Women were supposed to do house jobs, keep their mouths shut, and support their husbands’ decisions and men were seen as the headman or boss. A Raisin in the Sun shows readers a window into the world where those gender roles have a twist on them. Women in the time of A Raisin in the Sun were supposed to be subservient to men.
The Dinner Party Gender doesn’t define who you are and how you act. Men think they are invincible and it sometimes leads them on to say bold things. In “The Dinner Party”, by Mona Gardner the story takes place in India around the time period of 1940’s . During this time, society pushes the perspective of women in a negative way. Among the many guests there was a young girl and a high ranking colonel.
This play, A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, focuses on women, especially in marriage and motherhood. Torvald is a character, who describes inequality between men and women and the women’s role in the society in that era. He believes that it is an important and the only duty of a woman to be a good wife and mother. As an individual, a woman, could not conduct or run a business of her own, she needs to ask her father or husband and they were only considered to be father’s or husband’s property. Women were not allowed to vote and divorce if they were allowed they would carry a heavy social shame and it was only available when both partners agreed.
One of the biggest struggles that women has to go through is not getting paid as equally as men. An Equal Pay Act in 1963 had to be made in order to forbid sex based wage discrimination, even though women are still getting 91 cents of every dollar earned by men (10 Challenges That American Women Still Face Today, paragraph. 2). In Russia, many women are paid less than men and their wage and salaries were 70% of men (Snezhkova, (2005), Page 3). This became a problem for many other countries where women wages would be 84% of men also and they would only receive just 58% of the income from their spouse (Social Inequalities, the World Cup, and Some Simple Solutions, Paragraph 6).
