Until the Progressive Era, many minorities, including women, were denied what is now considered a basic right either through law or tradition. Women’s suffrage faced opposition due to fear from influential groups. For example, the liquor industry did not find it within their interest to support suffrage because of the fear of women voting for prohibition, which force their companies into bankruptcy (Danzer 522). The owners of textile factories were disturbed about the fact that women have been more likely than men to vote in favor of child labor restrictions (Danzer 522). These child labor restrictions could force the owners of companies to hire adult workers, who they viewed as more expensive and more likely to strike (Child).
Throughout history, men and women have had their share of differences. For men, women should stay at home and look out for the good of the family, although women knowing their place in society have fought to make the space they live, a better one. During the 1910s, the story was not different; it seemed that for men the importance of a city more than its beauty was its profitability. No matter how ugly it turned out to be, how contaminated and how unbearable to live in was, as long as a profit can be made out of it, as long as businesses can grow and make it in a man’s way a livable city. Slavery is a horrific event that corrupted a large part of America’s history, but a subject that is just as discriminative is the injustice toward women. The topic of slavery lasted in our history for centuries. It may have been abolished in 1865, but the harsh lifestyle of slavery lasted another century. The rights of women went on a similar but not as physically demanding journey as African American’s. Why it took so long for women to gain other rights is still in question.
Gender inequality is not a new topic. Throughout history, women have faced significant sexist discrimination starting with being denied basic rights enjoyed by men. In fact, women acted as a critical component for better working conditions in factories and the elimination of child labor.
Throughout history discrimination has had a negative impact on people and has cause certain groups of people to suffer. Discrimination can be against people of different race, religion, gender and sexuality and in the late 1800’s women were one of the groups that were discriminated.
