Until the Progressive Era, many minorities, including women, were denied what is now considered a basic right either through law or tradition. Women’s suffrage faced opposition due to fear from influential groups. For example, the liquor industry did not find it within their interest to support suffrage because of the fear of women voting for prohibition, which force their companies into bankruptcy (Danzer 522). The owners of textile factories were disturbed about the fact that women have been more likely than men to vote in favor of child labor restrictions (Danzer 522). These child labor restrictions could force the owners of companies to hire adult workers, who they viewed as more expensive and more likely to strike (Child).
Gender inequality is not a new topic. Throughout history, women have faced significant sexist discrimination starting with being denied basic rights enjoyed by men. In many societies, women have been categorized as inferior to men. Greek poet, Homer, consistently highlighted this ‘women are inferior’ theme throughout his writings of The Iliad and The Odyssey. Even though this degradation of women has currently been brought to light in the 21st century, it continues to remain a serious issue.
The women’s movement throughout the 1800s relied mostly on other social campaigns to begin its pivotal role in their own revolutionary protests. After the Great Awakening, many women revived their religious views and advocated for the prohibition of alcohol and for the freedom of slaves. These actions advanced their speech skills and taught the masses how to organize to progress, thus strengthening their operations in the future. So, in the midst of their fight for gender equality many other issues were mixed in, and those problems were resisted through the help of women. In fact, women acted as a critical component for better working conditions in factories and the elimination of child labor.
Throughout history discrimination has had a negative impact on people and has cause certain groups of people to suffer. Discrimination can be against people of different race, religion, gender and sexuality and in the late 1800’s women were one of the groups that were discriminated.
