Gender Issues In 'White Boys And Dead End'

The first predominate issue occurring throughout Hair is inequality of race. This really stood out to me because these are still huge issues today, nearly 50 years later. Something really cool about this musical is that is was a front runner for racial integration on broadway with 1/3 of the cast being African American. Race is addressed throughout the show but primarily in the songs "Black Boys", "White Boys", and "Dead End". In which they talk about issues such as miscegenation and alienation. Unfortunately, due to who has been recently elected president, I don't see this issues going away any time soon. They even have a scene done completely nude meant to represent sexual expression and freedom. Apart from Hair speaking on the acceptance of interracial relationships it also speaks of their sense of free love and sexuality fluidity. This is something that has definitely improved quite a bit since the 60's. Back in their time love was seen as being between a man and a woman and between two people of the same race and religion. Hair was a peak into all the different types of love that are beginning to be celebrated much more today. Whether it be between an asian woman and a black woman, a hispanic woman and a white man, or even three individuals. Hair showed the people that love comes in all shape and sizes and that there is no right or wrong way to love. In June 26th, 2015 love won and while the LGBT community still faces many issues we are beginning to be become much more accepted. This is yet another reason why the show Hair is so important today. So many of the issues addressed in Hair are issues still to this day and with our generation often viewed as the "hippies of today" its no question why many of the things we are fighting for are a mirror images of the things these people fought for back in the
