John Krakauer wrote the Devils Thumb as a story but with bits of flashback to add depth to the story. In doing this he explains why he chose to climb the mountain. “Although my plan to climb the Devils Thumb wasn’t fully hatched until the spring of 1977, the mountain had been lurking in the recesses of my mind for about fifteen years ... the occasion was my eight birthday. After reading the book, “Race, Gender, and Punishment: From Colonialism to the War on Terror” by Mary Bosworth and Jeanne Flavin, they discuss what they feel are the four “sociohistorical processes (Bosworth, Flavin: 2)” of social control, these being colonialism, slavery, immigration, and globalization. The authors separate each of these into their own chapter for a certain reason, to show the treatment of colonized people. The book focuses on how “colonialism, like each of the factors that underpin this collection, operates both structurally…and ideologically through culture, and the construction of the imaginary. This was formed from years of social views and gender representations in film. Women were often thought of as people who had small roles to play in life and a desire to there working class of men. The males were given heroic and superior roles, usually seen saving the day or doing what it took to support a family as seen in The Searchers where the men had to protect the family in search for their loved ones after the Indians raided the family’s home. In the movie cowboys vs aliens we also had a similar situation where the males had to leave home in search for their enemy. Males are still seen in this way in featured films and females still desired over men with their feminine aspects.
This thesis project will use Elizabeth Comack’s racialized policing theory as the main guiding theoretical framework. Comack argues that racialization occurs when certain views of a minority are normalized, which can lead to racist attitudes towards those minority groups (Comack, 2012). Certain views about Sikhs are racialized by the majority. According to a variety of literature towards the Sikh diaspora, Sikhs are racialized as terrorist, dangerous, and a feared body, based on views given by the media. Potter and Kappeler’s have argued that the media racializes minorities as dangerous (Potter & Kappeler, 2012).
Another popularly stigmatized issue within the Chicanx community is the issue of gang injunctions. In Ana Muniz’s book, Police, Power, and the Production of Racial Boundaries, she highlights the injustices against the Chicano community done by their fellow neighbors and the community police because their culture is often a nuisance to other residents. Muniz uses the city Cadillac-Corning as her prime example to look at the gang injunction model. She states that, “the gang injunction model is being used to police political behavior as well as “criminal deviance” done by the Chicanos of the community” (Muniz 34). The problem within the community, to the other residents, is the violent behavior and threat to themselves, so they want to implement
For many of years, many researchers and the justice system have seen a big increase in women being incarcerated. As stated in the article "Should the Criminal Justice System Treat female Offender Differently," by Jill L. Rosenbaum many of the offenses by women are less violent and most likely be “status offense. ”As we notice the increase in women and a decrease in men, we wonder if there a psychological reason for this discovery. Should women be treated differently?
“As if!” there are still stereotypes of women. Society has getting better with trying not to stereotype women, but after studying the movie Clueless, the stereotypes that were shown in the movie still exist today. For many years women have been told that they have to fit a certain image for our society’s needs. From a woman’s perspective, there are many expectations that are held and are impossible to be met. From a young age, girls everywhere are being told that what they’re doing is never good enough.
In the midst of police brutality controversy, a new video went viral on social media showing a South Carolina deputy Ben Fields, violently throwing a high school from her desk in a classroom. “Give me your hands” fields repeated to the silent girl after pinning her to the ground. Let’s review the chain of events that lead such poor example of police intervention. The victim, who’s not yet been identified, was spotted using her cell phone by her teacher during math class.
Who is the target? I hate when people complain about racial profiling in the police force. African Americans are not the only race that has conflict with the police. I know because I have been in a situation where I could have been easily racial profiled but I was not. About four weeks ago I was in a store and I heard the manager complaining to a white policeman that a man in a red hoodie was stealing.
The sociological perspective encourages us to explore societies’ problems from a non-biased perspective. When investigating controversial issues it is quintessential to keep one’s opinion out of the equation. As C. Wright Mills stated in his 1959 essay “The Promise”, “Problems and their solutions don’t just involve individuals; they also have a great deal to do with the social structures in our society” (Leon-Guerrero, 2015). Eliminating personal experiences and self-perception creates an even playing field to determine fact from fiction.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, departments that serve less than 2,500 people are 84.4% white and departments that serve millions are 53.4% white (as cited in Fifield, 2016). Notably, Over the years, a lack of diversity within law enforcement has become a pertinent issue. Notably, the underrepresentation of minorities within law enforcement influences the relationship between communities and law enforcement by engendering distrust with law enforcement. To say nothing of, underrepresentation of minorities have had many people question whether departments mirror a diverse community. Nevertheless, with that being said, underrepresentation of minorities have generated tension and distrust between communities and law enforcement and many believe that police department need to mirror the race composition within their cities.
Can Societal Gender Roles Limit an Individual? A man is supposed to be strong, powerful, and well respected. What if all genders were seen in the same light? In most societies, past and present, men are viewed as the dominant gender.
Feminist theory shows the ways of a gender structured life . This culture is also displayed in Crime and Punishment by Sonya and Dunya. Feminist criticism is a type of literary criticism that was well known in the 1970’s. Women would begin taking apart the classics and analyzing how the author portrayed women. The women in Crime and Punishment , especially Sonya and Dunya have a stronger state of mind and are able to handle the pressures and struggles of life better than the men in the novel.
There are many indicators of the huge impact in disparities in sentencing women as compared to men and more so when it revolves around minorities ( race and class). Though there are lower crime rates among women as compared to men, there are significant disparities which tend to show favouritism to women. Research has shown that men get 63 per cent longer custodial sentences than women. In addition, it is twice more likely to have women get non custodial sentences even after conviction. However, as mentioned the disparities are more profound when issues of race and class are intertwined in the sentencing.
