For many of years, many researchers and the justice system have seen a big increase in women being incarcerated. As stated in the article "Should the Criminal Justice System Treat female Offender Differently," by Jill L. Rosenbaum many of the offenses by women are less violent and most likely be “status offense.”As we notice the increase in women and a decrease in men, we wonder if there a psychological reason for this discovery. Should women be treated differently? Is it fair?

For example, in 1968 a couple participated in an armed robbery of a cab driver. After being caught in New York, the police sent the girl back to California and labeled as a runaway, while the court charged the boy with armed robbery. In the past women were mostly seen as an innocent and weak person. Now, for the justice system to treat men and women equally, schools have enabled a no tolerance rule. This rule states that children who are charged with crimes that are usually fixed with psychological help were now handled in court. It provokes the question when either this a gender biased or a concrete way to incorporate an insight into the criminal delinquency within the female population. It can question how women criminal offenses stem from abuse/violence within family/social settings and relationship are causing a violent victimization complex. It also opens many psychological theories like general strain theory, which can be reasonable of why woman and girls act out.
