Theda Perdue`s Cherokee Women: Gender and Culture Change, 1700-1835, is a book that greatly depicts what life had been like for many Native Americans as they were under European Conquering. This book was published in 1998, Perdue was influenced by a Cherokee Stomp Dance in northeastern Oklahoma. She had admired the Cherokee society construction of gender which she used as the subject of this book. Though the title Cherokee Women infers that the book focuses on the lives of only Cherokee women, Perdue actually shines light upon the way women 's roles affected the Native cultures and Cherokee-American relations. In the book, there is a focus on the way that gender roles affected the way different tribes were run in the 1700 and 1800`s.
Second wave civilizations such as Rome, China, India, and Greece all experienced massive inequality formed by caste and class systems, patriarchies, and slavery. In all of these societies, women were seen as a minority. For example, in China, women were associated with weakness and darkness and that their one contribution to life was the ability to carry a child, preferably a boy. This idea of women as lesser was generally accepted by high class women who had leverage in their marriage because of their dowry and some even gained political power accomplished by leader Empress Wu. Another group with massive inequalities were the merchants of China.
The Journey from Restrained to Independent The evolution of women’s rights has a unique history of its own. Women’s rights have evolved tremendously throughout many decades. Going back to the colonial times, English women did not have personal rights and they served as maids to their loved ones. Modern women have the freedom that our female ancestors did not have.
The Choctaw people were once a prosperous Native American tribe in the United States of America that settled in more than 50 villages in an area now known as Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Southern Mississippi.. From a young age girls are expected to be binding their feet and are told that it is to look beautiful, but in reality that is not why. When a womans feet are bound they are restrained and silenced. These girls could be free and happy but they are restrained by men through this binding.
It is not a new idea that women can function well in positions of authority? There have been many women who played crucial roles in leadership positions throughout history. The history of the Cherokee Indians contains several examples of women who have risen to positions of influence in their society! Such women were named “Beloved Women” by the tribe. A Cherokee woman could, “take her husband’s place in war.” and be given the name “War Woman” as a result.
