Rainsford is only provided a little bit of food and a knife as said in the rules, “I give him a supply of food and an excellent hunting knife.” Zaroff is given a gun and a house to stay in as said in the text, “I am to follow, armed only with a pistol of the smallest caliber and range.” Zaroff’s weapon advantage makes the game extremely unfair because it’s bringing a knife to a gunfight. In almost all circumstances the man with a gun would have a higher advantage.
In the story General Zaroff says,”Some he makes kings, some beggars. Me, He made a hunter” (Connell Pg. 223). This quote shows that General Zaroff is definitely a hunter, he has been a hunter for his whole life. Also in the story it shows that Rainsford is a major and famous hunter. General Zaroff mentions how he read Rainsfords books on hunting the Snow Leopard.
To prove my point even more Rainsford says that “The world is made up of two classes the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are hunters”. This will go on to show when Rainsford becomes the huntee his mind becomes made up of

He will not hunt again, he has too many traumatizing memories from this experience. Rainsford will not resume hunting since he is emotionally scarred from his time on the island. Also, General Zaroff is an extreme hunter and doesn’t find pleasure in hunting regular animals. Zaroff says the most dangerous game is humans because they have the ability to reason. Rainsford is going to be hunted and is given a certain amount of time to survive. Moreover, while Rainsford is being hunted Zaroff
General Zaroff is an amazing hunter, “[has] hunted every kind of game in every land” (). Since he has hunted every animal and was smarter than every animal, there was nothing left for him to hunt. General Zaroff had been hunting since he was a child, and he thought all animals were too easy, except one. “‘It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason’” (). By this, he means humans.
Fear is not real. It is the product of thoughts you create. Danger is very real, but fear is a choice. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character Rainsford is being hunted which creates fear in him. He is scared of dying but overcame his fear by facing the danger of the hunting game.
However, he is now ready to fight to the death, which shows that his opinion has changed. That just makes him no better than Zaroff “the murderer”. It seems as if Zaroff has passed on his role to Rainsford and he is now the new Zaroff. How else can he sleep so well if he feels remorse over killing a fellow human? Zaroff told him he could leave the island if he won but he stays.
Rainsford has no way to live unless he kills General Zaroff because Zaroff would most likely continue to force Rainsford to
“I am strong, I hunt the scum of the earth”(17). He only kills them because he wants to hunt something that can reason, something that can change its mind when faced with a life or death situation. “But they are men,” said Rainsford hotly. “Precisely,” said the general”(17). Zaroff is an apex hunter, and he demands the ultimate prey.
Before Rainsford falls off the yacht Rainsford says that hunted animals have no feelings. Rainsford and Whitney are discussing about how animals have no feeling while being hunted. “Nonsense...Be a realist the world is made up of two classes-the hunter
