In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald's, Jay Gatsby is the main charetcar and his actions during the story show him as a complex, multilayered being and an ambiguous one at that. Gatsby may come off as selfish but there have been times in his life that he has been truly generous. For example Gatsby’s father told Nick, "He came out to see me two years ago and bought me the house I live in now.” (F. Scott Fitzgerald's, 172), at Gatsby's funeral. This shows Gatsby's good side and true generosity and he knew that he had a bright future ahead of him and put his mind towards that future.
