Inequality. We have heard this word many times before. Truly, the world is not a fair place, but why? Why do people in the United States have homes, and power, and food, while people in Africa are still starving? Is it because of race? Because of gender? No, it’s due to someone’s geographical location. Geography controls the climate of all civilizations. Climate dictates what crops can grow, and what animals can survive. Geography decides whether or not steel can be crafted. It decides whether a civilization lives on, or dies trying. The geography of someone’s civilization, will govern what crops they can grow. However, they play other roles as well. Due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis, some locations get more sunlight than others. Near the equator, sunlight can be seen for majority of the day. The climate ends up being very hot and dry for almost the entire year. The farther north, or south someone goes from the equator, the colder the climate becomes, and the less sunlight someone receives in a day. Near the equator, we find the Fertile Crescent, strip of land in the MIddle-East. Its’ climate is dry, and semi-arid. Lacking lots of moisture, with lots of sunlight. Here, we can see that a dominant crop in this land is wheat. Wheat is a cereal grain, which does not require lots of water to grow. In fact, too much water will damage and kill the crop. This makes it perfect for growing in this climate. Its’ affinity for drier places also allows it to be stored for 2-3 years, as long as it doesn't come in contact with moisture. It is also nutritious, with high protein, a necessary nutrient. Its’ also very easy to harvest, another bonus for the Fertile Crescent.
