I have been following the work of American newspaper columnist, George Frederick Will for the past few weeks. Although Will is best known for his conservative commentary on politics, I chose to write on columns with different topics pertaining to society today. Reading such columns showed me that there is a great deal of other issues present in the world, aside from politics. I enjoyed learning about current events in the world and analyzing Will’s literature.
When researching Will and writing his biography, I discovered that he was motivated in his academics. He went to college with a full ride scholarship and continued his education at prestigious schools such as Princeton University. Through reading his columns, it is apparent he is well educated and exceedingly articulate. After writing my first column, I found myself questioning why I chose Will as my columnist. I found this especially intriguing because, as a student, I am directly impacted by this. Will writes about legacies and how they usually have an upper hand when it comes to getting into certain universities. Although it may not be completely fair, I agree with Will that one should not refrain from using the advantages he or she has. I know I would. In this particular column, Will reminded me that when it comes to the schools I want to go to I, not being a legacy, will have to work extra hard to reach my goals.
In this column, Will mainly wrote about meritocracy and whether or not it functions as intended. Will convinced me that while meritocracy was developed with the best intentions, it turned about to be regressive. I feel this is a constant theme in society these days. What I got from this is that no matter the situation, one should thoroughly consider the impact one’s actions have on all people.
