During the Great Depression, many people were in a severe situation because of an economic crisis worldwide. In North America, California, One of the examples of a migrant worker who suffered from the crisis, George Milton, is a main actor of the story and he works at a ranch. “He is small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features, every part of him was defined: small strong hands, slender arms, a thin and bony nose” (Steinbeck, 1965, p.2). He is completely different from his beloved friend, Lenny Small, in terms of both physical and mental. George is more intelligent than Lennie, so he devoted to his friend by taking responsibility of Lennie. Moreover, George is an idealist who has a plan …show more content…
Even though, many times that he is bored of Lennie, whose habits that are similar to a baby in a gigantic body, which normally makes George into a trouble. Therefore, he reprimanded his best friend for causing a problem by using an offensive word. For example, “ God, you are a lot of trouble, I could get along so easy and so nice if I did not have you on my tail, I could live so easy and maybe have a girl” (Steinbeck, 1965, p.3-4). However, George always loves as well as taking care of Lennie. We can say that a relationship between these two men can be described as a great companionship, and George once said to Lennie “I want you to stay with me, Lennie. Jesus Christ, somebody’s shoot you for a coyote if you was by yourself” (Steinbeck, 1965, p.7). The words can be shown that George worried about his friend even though he complained about him a lot. Furthermore, George is just an ordinary person, as many other people, who has a dream to have and own a small land as well as living peacefully in that place. As he mentioned, “We are going to get the jack together and we are going to have a little house and a couple of acres and a cow and some pigs ” (Steinbeck, 1965, p.8). He does not want to be a vagrant person who works and moves from place to place without a stable life, and he hopes to live happily ever after in his own …show more content…
In my opinion, if there is no George, it is hardly imagine how Lennie is going to be like. We would not see as a mean of a nice friendship between them. As Crooks mentioned, “ A guy set alone out here at night, maybe reading books or thinking” (Steinbeck, 1965, p.35). Without George, Lennie would be similar to Crooks, who does not have anyone beside him because he is a black American. Lennie would also have no one help or look after him, and it is impossible for Lennie himself to think about a dream of having the tiny house or a small land without George. It also seems to me that it is difficult for Lennie to get a job without George because he managed that for him every time. I am confidently said that his life without George would be as empty and lonely as Crooks. Personally, George seems to be a north star for Lennie, and without him there would be no light as a navigation to lead a way while he was in the dark. In conclusion, the story illustrates that nowadays our society are destroying a purity and value of human beings. Many people work hard for themselves in order to live and survive in the world of Capitalism. It also shows that no one is perfect, even George himself also has his own weakness. He has Lennie as his best friend even though Lennie is abnormal. Therefore, humans deeply need someone to fulfill the other parts of their lives, which are much better than living alone in the
