George Orwell 1984 Comparison Essay

My free choice novel is 1984 by George Orwell. I heard about this book from my father, who read it when he was in high school.

He said that it was a good book to read. Since it is a popular book, I've heard about before. I know that it is a dystopian novel, so I

thought it would be an interesting and unique read. I wanted to challenge myself and read a book from a different genre from

the ones I regularly read, so I choose this book, so I went to the library and checked it out.

The blank, white background on the book, printed repeatedly with a faded gray text that reads, "War is peace, freedom is slavery,

ignorance is strength."—This itself already tells us that this book will become dark. You're probably thinking, "What do you expect from a …show more content…

They are all dark." But from what I've heard, this book is about George Orwell's prophecy of what will happen in our

world in the year of 1984 (It was published in 1949), where the government spies on people and controls everything, which in itself is

rather morbid and secretive.

Similarly, the description on the back speaks for itself as it refers to the main character, Winston Smith, joining a

"covert brotherhood", and becoming an "enemy of the state", who we follow through "his rebellion, imprisonment, torture, and

reeducation"—Similar to Nelson Mandela! Just by reading the second part of the last sentence, it can be inferred that the book will feature

a plot with a dark mood and a condescending tone, but the phrase that follows truly unravels everything:

"We witness first hand the worst crime, we can inflict upon ourselves and others: the destruction of the truths and freedoms that

make us who we are"

This blatantly means that the government of the Republic of Oceania in this story, will be repressive and dictatorial, and the

citizens will have no rights or any freedoms, which is a topic that Americans, like us, aren't as troubled about, compared to other nations
