Chapter 24 summary: George goes on the Metro to England and meets a newlywed pair of Romanian citizens. He tells them stories about England and the French relations to them. He spends all day roaming the city of London. He tries to pawn his clothes but they were refused by many shopkeepers. He is spending the night at a place and his money is rapidly running out. Chapter 25 summary: He finds a better house to stay in. He loves the kitchen, where longshoremen do their laundry half naked. Orwell says they share food with everyone and finds London cleaner and more boring than France. There is not as much drunk people or fighting, and there is a lot more eating of tea and bread. Orwell does get into an argument between Mormons and a crowd smearing them as polygamists, and another fight at the lodging house between a well-fed longshoreman and an old age pensioner who has lost his supply of bread The latter fight is ugly and it ends with the old man weeping into his hands. Otherwise, it’s like all the others. After leaving Edbury, Orwell and Paddy spend the day walking around London. They’re exhausted and their feet are hurting, but sitting is not allowed in London. Orwell and Paddy end up at a Salvation Army shelter. One young man begins to rant about his job, cursing the Salvation Army’s overtly Christian mission. Orwell assumes he’s drunk. Later, he finds the young man praying and then realizes the man is actually starving.That morning, Orwell goes to visit his friend B. and asks for a pound, he gives him two. Orwell and Paddy find another lodging house to stay in for the night—a dark, unpleasant place that is apparently haunted by gay people. There, Orwell sees two men—one clothed, one naked—bartering over clothes. They later come to terms and trade
