The first text is 1984 by George Orwell. Orwell describes a dystopian version of the 1980’s in London. Winston Smith is a government worker whose job is to distort history to the liking of the all-powerful regime that rules his homeland. The government aims to take knowledge of the truth away from its citizens so they cannot govern themselves; to them, “Ignorance is Strength” (Orwell) . Winston is a bit rebellious and does not favor his ruler, who is named “Big Brother”. Although it is a crime, he begins to record his thoughts and write of his life and experiences living in London with such supreme, totalitarian leaders. “Big Brother” has made use of the technological advancements of the time to monitor almost all activities of the citizens of London to ensure there is no threat of rebellion or disorderly conduct of any kind. …show more content…

Like the journal Winston keeps secret of his ill thoughts of his government, relationships of love with other people are also highly unfavorable by the government’s standards. Knowing this, he still begins a relationship with another government worker named Julia. Julia also despises the government and Big Brother which she is required to serve, like Winston. She resists the total control the government has and believes that “one thing that matters is that we shouldn’t betray each other” (Orwell) in order to further organize and fight the oppression of London. Winston is originally skeptical about Julia and whether or not he can trust her, talk to her, and love her; he “learns that he has nothing to fear from the girl with the dark hair. When they bump into each other in the corridor at the Ministry of Truth.”(Bloom) With all of these perceived crimes he is committing, he is eventually apprehended by a man he once considered a confidant,
