In the novel Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, the main character is Richie Perry. At seventeen he graduated high school in Harlem, and he wanted to go to college, but his mother couldn’t afford to send him to college since she was an alcoholic. So he joined the army to escape his unfortunate future, but joining the army meant he had to leave his little brother Kenny, who saw him as a father figure since their father left when they were younger. Perry was sent to Vietnam and through his journey, he made lifelong bonds with many different people such as PeeWee, Monaco, and etc. Also in his journey, he suffers from mental and physical wounds.
Danny Saunders Set in the 1940’s to 1950’s, any normal young man might spend his free time at a drive-in movie or bowling alley. Perhaps he might absorb himself in the action of World War II. Not Danny, a young Russian Hasidic Jew living in Brooklyn, whose father leads their Jewish sect as a Rabbi, and who only has one close friend, Reuven Malter. Through the turning of each page of The Chosen, by Chaim Potok, one may glean an even deeper understanding of the complex individual, Danny Saunders. Danny presents as an intricately formed character with many facets to him.

Danny Saunders presents an emotional enigma. On a surface level, his attributes appear clear, but as one examines deeper, his emotions take on a blurry existence. Reuven especially never seems to discern what Danny is feeling and why. This makes it an extraordinarily difficult task to assess the basic mold of Danny’s personality. When distilling him down, it is near impossible to go any deeper than the obvious points.
Kindness is often overlooked in society yet it still manages to hold a great deal importance in the lives of many. Kindness is an empowering emotion that can change perspectives and alter destinies. In The Glass Roses by Alden Rowan the true importance of kindness is personified throughout the story. In the story Stephen is encapsulated by the kindness of his fellow worker and greatly impacts Stephan’s ability to determine his own destiny. The Glass Roses shows that individuals tend to hide their true emotions in order to gain respect from their peers however kindness, once truly unveiled can play a huge role in determining ones destiny.
Sometimes when asked to define a word that everyone knows the meaning of, it can be hard to articulate the true meaning of that word. Compassion seems to be one of them. Gregory Boyle does his best to define compassion by saying “compassion isn’t just about feeling the pain of others; it’s about bringing them in toward yourself” (75). If we are to be as compassionate as God is compassionate, then we must destroy stereotypes and break boundaries that separate the marginalized from the non-marginalized. Boyle goes on to try to further explain compassion by giving explicit examples from his life where compassion was shown, by either him or another human being.
Compassion is an extremely powerful emotion. It’s when you help someone get through an awful time in their life. Usually if it’s someone or something you, love you can show compassion towards it, You’ll end up putting an extreme amount of love and compassion into something you care about. If your loved one is going through an event you’ve gone through, you can empathize with them and connect. Showing love and compassion can let other people know what kind of person you are.

In one circumstance, we may feel the need to give to those who are poor to keep them from getting in our personal space; and in other circumstances we feel that we give to others out of the kindness of our heart. I completely agree with Ascher and her views on compassion, because I have been in similar situation where I have questioned why people give money, and whether they give with a whole heart or out of necessity.
