George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 to Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington, who was his second wife. Washington had five brothers who all helped work on the plantation his mother and father owned. Washington was only eleven when his father died. After his father’s death, he took on the responsibility of the plantation. Even though Washington was very bright, not much is known on his education. Historians believe that he had a private tutor at home like most upper class children. Washington was particularly bright in mathematics at the time. In 1751, he went out of the country for the first time with his brother. While out of the country, he contracted smallpox that killed one of his teachers. Washington lived, but was
