George Washington is an important historical character that was significant to the development of the United Sates. George Washington has an outstanding list of accomplishments and is known for his ability to lead and improve a country. George Washington, a federalist born on December 14, 1799 took his oath for office as the first President of the United States on April 30, 1789. Washington’s commitment to the United States as the first president was the start of a new, better, and more stable country. Before his presidency the country was functioning under the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation were created on November 15, 1777. The role of the Cabinet, is to guide “the President on any subject he may require relating to the duties of each member’s respective office.” George Washington’s cabinet included four members, Thomas Jefferson, the Secretary of State, Alexander Hamilton, the Secretary of Treasury, Henry Knox, the Secretary of War, and Edmund Randolph, Attorney General. The office of Attorney General was founded when Washington signed the Judiciary Act of 1789. Washington didn’t have his cabinet voted in or chosen at random, he chose members from different regions of the country. The members were chosen this way “in order to establish both credibility and balance.” The first cabinet meeting was on February 25, 1798. Along with the creation of the Cabinet and the selection of its members, George Washington created and selected the Supreme Court and its first members. During his presidency Washington selected 38 United States federal judges. First were “two justices of the Supreme Court of the United States and ten district court judges.” He then selected ten justices, two Chief Justices and one former Justice, then 28 judges to the United States district court. The First Supreme Court was created and met in New York City on February 2, 1790. The “six man” Supreme Court met at the national capital twice a year, the first Monday in February and the first Money in August. The Supreme Court justices met twice a year also at the district court. Supreme Court justices spend most of their time traveling. Each justice is said to be given “to one of the geographical circuits and traveled to the designated meeting places within the districts of that circuit.” Today the Supreme Court is the highest court in the land and is very important as it was back then. The Supreme Court consists of the Chief Justice of the United States and eight Associate Justices. The President of the United States still nominates the positions and the Supreme Court is run very similar to the way it was in the beginning. According to the “American Government” the Supreme Court today receives about 7,000 petitions every year. The justices are said to choose around 90% out of 100 of their cases, if four justices vote to hear a case, they out rule all nine. The Court listens and decides on cases as one.
