O’Keeffe’s parents saw an artist in her and made sure she received the best schooling to pursue her dream.

Born on November 15, 1887 on a farm in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, O’Keeffe was the second of seven children. It was very common during this time for young women to partake in many different art styles to decorate the family houses, however, it was not common for women to pursue a successful career in arts, especially that of painting. O’Keeffe attended the Art Institute of Chicago from 1905 to 1906 and the Art Students League in New York from 1907 to 1908.

Mary was known for her signature pieces sure as the stone reliefs, optical lens boxes, assemblages, and drawings to name a few.
