She lived in the United Stated from 1962 to 1972 where she worked on her pieces as well. Mary was known for her signature pieces sure as the stone reliefs, optical lens boxes, assemblages, and drawings to name a few. When she moved to New York like most well-known artists did her studio was the place to be. Her studio served as a place for meet and greets and hosted other events. The famous 20th century artists and musicians that used her studio were Nam June Paik, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Merce Cunningham. In 1962 she had her first major exhibition at the Stedelijk museum in Amsterdam which she collaborated with Stockhausen that would later be her husband. On her way back from her trips from Amsterdam Mary and her husband Stockhausen stopped in a small community where she purchased boxes of optical lenses from an antique Shop. Once she got back to home she started to experiment with her new find. The lenses where used to magnify and distort the objects that where seen in the boxes. …show more content…

Baurmeister works were displayed at the Galeria Bonnina on west 57th street. The reason why she moved to the United States was because she felt that there were better opportunities here in American than Germany with her style of work. The move to America was inspired by Robert Rauschenberg’s pieces she had seen on American contemporary art at the Stedelijk Museum. Her decision to move was a successful one for her profession. Even though her works is hard to determine which particular movement it was
