The travel writer, Gerald John Emery, has written a short text in which he discusses why a multiculturalist view of the world can give us hope. He uses multiple literary devices to enhance his message and reach out the reader. The first literary device that is important to take note of is the tone. The tone helps the reader to determine the writer’s feelings towards a particular topic and this in turn influences the reader’s understanding of the text. In the first paragraph, he starts with an optimistic tone to convey that understanding multiple cultures has lead him to be more hopeful and confident about future. However, at times, the tone of the text can also be interpreted as being fearful. He says that the lack of this understanding and optimistic view can fuel the “fire of hate and ignorance.” The previous example leads us to another literary device: personification. The comparison that used in personification easier to understand when it has been given human traits or characteristics that the reader can relate to. In this case, it is hate and ignorance.
