The Battle of Gettysburg The Battle of Gettysburg was regarded as the turning point of the Civil War. Gen. Robert E. Lee decided in late June, early July to invade the North, the Union Army, with 75,000 troops. Lee was not aware of the strength the Union army had gotten stronger with their new Potomac leader. The Battle of Gettysburg, “the turning point,” started in July 1863. When Gen. Robert E. Lee decided to invade the North. He had held the army at their site until reinforcements arrived. While they were there a Confederate spearhead broke into the Union’s artillery, but got stopped by a fierce counterattack on three sides. Robert E. Lee had underestimated what they were capable of. On the last day, as the Confederate were walking down Chambersburg Road, they found out their real strength. John Bruford was now leading the Confederates, Gen. Robert E. Lee seemed to be ‘absent.’ Bruford was holding the Confederates back on top of a hill until aid could arrive. As the aid showed up the Union quickly took off after the Confederates to begin the battle. As the fighting began, the Union ran down through Gettysburg to Cemetery Hill, trying to reestablish the lines. Gen. Lee had arrived and seen what he Union was trying to do, and told his army to go at the Union strongly. The land had given the Union many advantages over the Confederates. The battle was regarded as the turning point of the war. This was said because as battle was going on, the new Potomac leader had arrived with more men to fight. Except when he arrived the Potomac leader had been shot by a Confederate sharp shooter. This mad the Union come at the Confederates with much more force.
