The Deer at Providencia Interpretive Response In Annie Dillard’s story, The Deer at Providencia, the author recounts a shocking event during her trip to Ecuador along with a small moment back in her home. What do these two seemingly unconnected moments have in common? They both share the idea of suffering and pity, which are greatly reflected in the story’s message. That message being to not be surprised by the suffering that surrounds this world.
In the book Touching Spirit Bear, a native boy named Chase Matthews, is constantly getting into trouble. Chase gets sent to a live on an island by himself, as punishment for a year where he couldn't hurt anybody but runs into an unlikely friend. Chase makes many mistakes but learns from them when he's on the island. This book has taught me a lot of stuff that comes into my life every day Chase burns down the small hut and all of the food that was left for him, tries to kill the spirit bear and when he talks to the spirit Bear. When Chase is dropped off by the elders on this remote island, he tries to act as though nothing can hurt him.
Book Review I think the book “Touching Spirit Bear” book is a extremely action packed & dramatic book. In this book two teenage boys (Peter and Cole) have a depressing start to life , on the other hand they starts to explore themselves and find who they truly are. DRAMA & ACTION. Those are the two main words. If you like drama and action i bet you would like this book.

Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen, focuses on a boy named Cole who doesn’t care about anything and does whatever he wants. He ends up beating up a fellow student and goes to jail for it, but has a chance to get out by going to an island to “change” for the better. In fact he does end up changing for the better and overcomes some of his big challenges.
In Annie Dillard’s, The Deer at Providencia, two clear examples of suffering are illustrated while four people take a journey through the Ecuadorian Jungle. The reader is able to see a deer tied to a tree and a man who is in critical condition after being burnt for the second time. The author makes it clear to the reader the suffering is not the fault of the one suffering but merely a result of accident and other people’s actions. While hiking through the jungle, four North Americans come across a village that is going about their day to day lives; however, at the forefront of the village is a deer roped to a tree waiting to die for the village to be able to eat. Most people do not have to remind themselves of things like not chewing on their shoes or being shunned, but in “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” by Karen Russell, Claudette is forced to worry about both, along with many more. Through Claudette’s journey she is faced with several obstacles and challenges that test her commitment and determination to become “civilized and ladylike, couth and kempt” (237). Claudette makes the transition from wolf to human girl by beginning to act more civilized with a changed mindset and separating herself from the pack. Throughout this story, the wolf pack is forced to go through a drastic change in their lives.
Cole’s Life Conflict What if the Cole was the Spirit Bear? What if he was really fighting with himself the whole time? It would make sense, whenever the Spirit Bear was around Cole, it is feeling the same way that Cole was.
Have you ever felt close to a certain animal, as if you share the same traits? I share the traits of a lot of animals, and was hard pressed to narrow it down to four. In Language Arts class, we did a novel study on the book Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen. In this novel, the main character is on an island and was told to carve a totem of his spirit animals. Take for instance stories of ghost sightings or, from a personal perspective, a friend once told me that is shouldn’t yawn without covering my mouth lest demons enter my body. All of us, at one point or another, and either directly or indirectly, have been in contact with, or experienced some form of superstition.
For my campus immersion activity, I watched the movie The Hunting Ground. This movie is a documentary based on college students and their struggles they have encountered about begin sexually assaulted on their campus. Throughout this movie, I found myself almost in tears, or clenching my blanket so tight because it was so difficult and frustrating to hear these victim’s stories and how they almost always never received the help they were hoping for from their own universities. Hearing statistics repeatedly mentioned about how colleges could have over 200 reported sexual assaults, but have only 1 expulsion, or only have 10 suspensions, is completely ridiculous and inconceivable. What is it going to take for these colleges to step up and help these victims and hold the assailants accountable?

The book Ghost of Spirit Bear is a sequel to the book Touching Spirit Bear. I enjoyed this book because it has a good story and plot. While this book is not as adventurous or moving as the first book Ghost of Spirit Bear still has a good plot and creates vivid pictures in your mind while reading. I prefered Touching Spirit Bear over this book because it has more adventure and a more shocking story. The book consists mainly of the same characters but more were added when Peter and Cole go to school.

In the short story “The Rattler,” a man must decide whether or not to spare the life of a rattlesnake that he encounters during a walk in the desert. He chooses to slaughter the snake, resulting in the snake’s gory death.
There are many motifs that can be analyzed in ghost literature and folklore, though one that is ever present throughout the beginning of the telling of ghost stories is the motif of the suicide ghost. This ghost manifests after the untimely demise of an individual who takes their own life. This motif is intriguing, because of its complex nature and the fact that this motif persists through time, as it is seen in early ghost stories to the most recent accounts of ghosts. The suicide victim is often seen as returning as a ghost, because of the idea that these victims have unfinished business and internal turmoil. The Hunt It was a gloomy September day and the bear hunting season was about to begin. The old farm truck was loaded full with barrels of cooking grease, assorted candy, birdseed and tubes of sticky frosting. We were to hunt four hours north in a little town called Orr, Minnesota. My family had an 80 acre lot that we used strictly for hunting. My mom volunteered to sit in the stand with me and videotape the hunt.
