“Killings”, Andre Dubus’ short story, revolves around a father who seeks vengeance against his son’s killer. The story is about the murders committed by Richard Strout and Matt Fowler in their attempt to get retribution and ease the pain in their hearts. The circle of killings is first caused by the murder of Matt Fowler’s son, Frank, by Richard, which leads to the retaliatory killing of Richard, by Matt. This infinite, unforgiving circle of killings and attempts at retribution is what Dubus portrays in a nonjudgmental view. The readers are left to see how the act of killing affects Richard and Matt and decide how much their retribution costs them.
The citizens then can see the different perspectives on the issue, and then base their view off the politicians’. Finally, contrasting characters can occur in books. This can happen between the protagonist and the antagonist or between two minor characters like Clarisse and Mildred in Fahrenheit 451. The author use contrasting
Man v. Man, Man v. Society, Man v. Nature, etc. Describe some of the minor conflicts that develop throughout the novel. Man V.S. society because society does not like Mr. Griffen because he is a tough teacher. Therefor, Griffen is the man and society does not like him.
An example of one of the conflicts presented is man vs society. To introduce, the main character Anita is living in a compound with her family in the Dominican Republic. Dealing with conflict is a constant struggle in many people’s everyday life. In the two texts, “Swimming Upstream” by Beth Brant and The Orenda by Joseph Boyden, two characters are shown to experience conflict within society. Christophe, from The Orenda is a charismatic Jesuit missionary devoting his life to convert the Huron, while Anna May is a homosexual in an unaccepting society. Besides their daily endurance with injustice, they also deal with the internal struggle of guilt. Both Christophe and Anna May are trapped within their own guilt as they blame themselves for the death of those around them.

Everyone faces conflict or struggles one time or another. A person’s view, or perception, of a situation can be positive or negative. Therefore a person’s perception will determine how that person behaves. When a conflict arises, a person’s perception plays an important role. In “A Separate Peace”, the primary conflict is Gene’s perception of Phineas, who was often called Finny, causes struggles in their friendship.

Society and government can inflict consequences on one’s desires. Miller’s element of tragedy is emphasized through the struggle one must go through to achieve his or her goals and what stands up against he or she. Steven R. Centola addresses the heroic figure one portrays when society is against he or she: “Miller's play transcends cultural and geographical boundaries with its inspired depiction of one man's heroic struggle to preserve his honor when threatened by a corrupt state authority” (Centola 1). Society often follows government rules without hesitation because they do not know better and do not want to face the consequences that result from acting against the government. However, the few that are willing to fight against corrupt government ways demonstrate heroic characters as they are the ones to initiate change in society.

While it can be used for pure fun, competition also inadvertently creates a healthy hierarchy between friends. Normally, the base of friendship itself is able to keep the competition from becoming overwhelming. However, John Knowles’ A Separate Peace suggests that self-doubt can cause the peace between competition and friendship to go awry and nearly ruin the most peaceful of relationships through Finny and Gene. Finny and Gene are introduced as two competitive, yet equal, best friends right away.
Secondhand smoke is a cause of many children 's deaths all over the world. Children of parents who smoke are exposed to SHS and are more likely to become ill and even die suddenly. The image chosen shows the use of rhetoric through the use of ethos, pathos, and logos by its appeal to society. People perceive smoking as a sign of weakness; weakness as in that the addictive product can cause lives to end but the consumer is too negligent to see that. Therefore, parents who smoke, tend to forget about the secondhand smoke their kids inhale.
Conflict is the essence of any literary fiction. The main goal of an author is to tell a story that keeps the reader interested. At the story’s core, conflict is the momentum of happening and change and is crucial on all levels for delivering information and building characterization as well as building the story itself. Conflict is the source of change that engages a reader and keeps them interested. In a story, conflict and action does what description and telling of feelings and situations do not.
Clearly, the characters and plot guides examples to the overall meaning of the title, for these subjects base the conflict, leading the problems to become obvious. Once noticing all dilemmas, readers care because the characters, conflict, and plot illustrate there allows more to just President JFK’s assassination, but real humans
In the novel “Of Mice and Men” John Steinbeck portrays the theme of social injustice throughout the story in the lives of several characters that include Lennie, Curley’s Wife, and the stable buck, Crooks. All of these characters are mistreated in some way, shape or form. The hardships that these characters faced help guide us to see the social injustice that is prevalent in the story. Lennie is a victim of social injustice due to the fact that he is mentally disabled. He is not treated fairly when he was accused of rape.
