Extended out to most children is the hand of a parent offering a warm hug along with warnings of danger to their children. This is what any fit parent would do. However this is not always the case with all parents. For example in the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Rose Mary and Rex Walls are not fit to be parents because they don’t give their children what they need and have an unstable relationship. Jeannette and her siblings live off of what their parents can afford when they have sufficient money but they don’t use it to give them what they need. The times where the Walls family did have enough money to spend on food or clothing they often spent on unnecessary objects. An example of this is Rose Mary choosing a piano over beds and food for her children. How they get food and shelter is dependant on the money that they make and how they use it,”Children cannot acquire their own food or sustain any reasonable shelter. Calling his wife distasteful names and setting a horrible example for his kids there is no doubt that Rex was abusive. It is traumatic to watch parents fighting and can mentally scar a child. Rose Mary has also had a share of acting out of control. She pointed a knife towards Rex and both have threatened each others lives. All of this happened before their children as they pleaded for them to stop. “These parents need to think about how to protect themselves and their children, and how to stop being violent” (“Needs of Children of Different Ages” Joan B. Kelly). Fit parents find other ways to deal with problems that do not involve violence to prevent any problems with their children’s mental state.
