A majority of people have most likely heard the phrase “you are you 're own worst enemy” at least once in their life. The phrase is communicating the belief that one can become their own biggest obstacle in life. Ralph Marston, an American writer, proclaims that a person must focus on the obstacles ahead of them instead of becoming fixated on themself. To achieve success one must not hesitate. Confidence is key. Multiple inspirational stories support Marston’s advice that is clearly valid, and useful when chasing one’s own success.

The opposition argues that certain individuals have no choice but to become their own obstacle. They claim that disabilities limit the room for success.. Sadly, the disabilities can lead to other self hindering problems such as depression. Doubt and self loathing cause people to get in the way of their vision. Focusing on the internal struggles makes one lose sight of the end goal; however, depression can be overcome. Eleanor Longden for example, became depressed after being diagnosed with schizophrenia. The voices in her head still remain to this day within her, yet she was able to overcome her depression through determination and courage. She remains to this day determined to overcome the obstacle of spreading the word about schizophrenia. While not every disability is treatable, the person must understand that success can come in different forms. If the disability is physical than the individual could possible pursue a path into other work not involving physical activity, and vise-versa for mental disability. Marston is simply stating that a person must target other obstacles in their path rather than themselves. It takes courage and bravery to accomplish this. Putting aside oneself to work on a goal is extremely difficult for many citizens.
