Dorothy Gale is a 12-year-old fictional character played by Judy Garland in the screen production of The Wizard of Oz in 1939. Dorothy is the protagonist in the novel and on screen and is most recognized character in The Wizard of Oz series. Dorothy and her small pet dog Toto reside in a one-room farmhouse in Kansas with her Uncle Henry and Aunty Em. In the film, Dorothy is a very sweet, adventurous, and kindhearted girl who loves her family, friends, and pet dog. She has dark brown and red hair with big brown eyes. She wears her hair in two pigtail braids and two baby blue bows at the end of her braids. She wears a blue dress with a white blouse underneath and of course the classic ruby shoes. Although she is dressed very nicely and well put together, she is brave and confident. Most heroines do not wear dresses, ruby shoes, and bows in their hair. Dorothy sticks out from the rest because she does dress nicer and at the same time she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty and take on a more masculine role. She faces life experiences and shows bravery throughout the movie while traveling with her friends in the movie. In Oz, she is immortal, respected, and educated. Her goal is to see the good in everyone even when they cannot see it themselves. She fights for peace and justice within Oz and therefore has a very protective and maternal instinct over the people in her land. Glinda is the witch who welcomes and greets Dorothy when she gets to Oz and sends her off to see the Wizard.
