"Avoid the term "global warming." I prefer the term "global weirding." This is a quote by Thomas Friedman, the author of the opinion column "Global weirding". Friedman talks about how the climate change is affecting the world and how experts urgently need to clarify what's real and what's not. The article was published on 17 February 2010. Thomas Friedman uses pathos, logos and diction to persuade his audience, ordinary people living in America, that the problem of climate change needs to be clarified in order to start acting against this issue.
One way Thomas Friedman convinces his audience of the essence of climate change is by using pathos. He for instance says: "The hots are expected to get hotter, the wets wetter, the dries drier and the most violent storms more numerous." He uses all these exaggerated facts to make the experts feel a sense of guilt. they are the ones who aren't doing a good enough job to stop the polluting of the world. He's stating numerous facts without drawing any conclusions out of them. This creates the opportunity for the reader to make their own conclusions and go as far in this as they want. This limits the boundaries and helps Friedman with making the essence of the problem clearer. By stating his facts in this particular way, Friedman uses less words. However the text becomes much more intriguing. It makes you have to think for yourself. With all these facts he also makes the reader feel smart compared to the experts. He states facts so easy that it seems like the experts have no idea what they're doing. This creates a positive experience for the reader. For them everything is stated completely logical.
