Globalization is something that has been on the forefront of many debates for many years. Some say it has been around since the beginning of time, while others say it started right after the conclusion of World War 2. Regardless of when globalization came to be, it is something that has impacted the world drastically, shaping our current way of life today. People may not realize it, but nearly everything we own is a result of globalization. The purpose of this assignment is to analyze and provide an in-depth analysis of what globalization is, and explain why it is occurring. To answer the question in simple terms, yes, globalization is occurring. With that said, the question at hand is why is globalization occurring? There are many theories as to why globalization is occurring. An example of one of those theories is the modernization theory. This is a theory that ultimately believes that all societies naturally progress through all the stages of development (lecture 9-2). Moving on from a theory example, there are some other crucial factors that impact the progression of globalization. Important factors in globalization include transportation, technology, and an international currency system (Lecture 9-2). These are all important things needed for globalization. Transportation wise, the best method for transporting goods is through the use of containerized shipping. This method allows for ships to hold thousands of containers containing thousands of goods within those containers themselves (Lecture 9-2). In addition to the efficient amount of goods that can be transported via containerized shipping, it is also the cheapest option as well. In simple terms, globalization is relevant to the study of global crime because global crime cannot happen without globalization occurring. As it has already been stated, globalization is the idea of making the world connected. Because the world is more connected with each other, this makes it easier for criminal groups to go worldwide. An example of a crime going worldwide is slavery. Beginning in the 15th century, Africa, America, and Europe had a trade system organized (Lecture 9-2). Africa would ship slaves to America, America would send sugar, tobacco, and cotton to Europe, and then Europe would send manufactured goods and rum to Africa (Lecture 9-2). Before this, slavery was local, meaning that the slaves were usually from the same town. So, because of globalization, this allowed the countries to make deals with each other and transport goods in return for things they wanted, which in this case were slaves. Another example that shows globalization relevance to global crime is piracy. Pirates are out patrolling the waters to hijack any ships containing goods. As the trading between the countries increased, piracy increased along with it. Before ships transported goods across the sea, pirates did not have anything big to steal.
