Hi, Mrs. Weatherford. I am Shaumia Henderson, an upcoming student in your Pre AP English 2 class for the 2015-2016 school year. I am truly excited to be taking this course, because I hear you are going to push me out of my comfort zone, which I need to happen in order for me to excel. Over the summer, we were assigned to read a novel and provide to you information in which we obtained in it. I chose Gloria Naylor’s, “The Women of Brewster Place”. This novel was very different than what I am used to. I loved this novel because I could relate to a lot of things in it. I have never felt so personally connected to a book. That certain part of the novel was filled with so much emotion, and tears. It was really realistic to me because I have seen reactions of losing a child. I also paid a lot of attention to the way that she arranged the book. In the novel, she introduced each and every character first, and while doing so, she told all of their backgrounds. I wondered how she would bring all of the characters together, since all of them were completely different from each other. But as I got closer to the end, I figured it out. She told the character’s stories in such an order that it gave us a preview of their role at the Brewster Place Home. Throughout the novel, from the beginning to the end, there were several symbols and motifs used. The first symbol I noticed was the sugar cane.
