Importance of Theory: King's Theory of Goal Attainment
Nursing theory is the basis of the professional practice of nursing which provides the structure in which nurses deliver patient care, perform research, promote professional development and autonomy. Nursing theory delivers a sense of identity for nurses and offers acknowledgment for the nurse’s role in the healthcare team. Theory is used in all aspects of nursing care and assists the practicing nurse in organizing, understanding and analyzing patient data (Matney, Avant, & Staggers, 2016, para. 3). Caring cannot be measured but yet explained and defined by nursing theory, as in King’s theory of goal attainment. A positive interaction leads to trust that builds upon an authentic relationship where the nurse and the patient mutually set goals and attain them; together. From this assignment, I have learned how to appropriately utilize nursing theory in my current practice and in my future practice as a nurse practitioner. I will have the ability to make a sound nursing judgement, which is the foundation of nursing excellence, while expanding my practice knowledge within my chosen specialty. My nursing practice will be enhanced by knowledge growth, and I will be able to provide high-quality care through not only learned skills but by fully applying the art of nursing. References
